Long Ago

My pride I keep in my ribs and in my heart it beats
Long ago, I was set free, from suffering, the righteous path we did lead
For our native earth so pure, it fed our hunger
Our great lakes gave way to another land, we did prosper
The stones we carved so carefully, made spears for our destiny
The hunt that gave us strength, and the spirit gave us hope
Long ago, my ancestors wrote upon these mountain walls
A story of no other known, but the wise and old would not let go
We have peace in our valleys, and the wind in our trees
As the drum will still beat for the meaning of our life, so it is said
We may have fled to the north, with the south behind us, our pride
Lay in the sands deep in the waters so long ago, never to hide
