Long-Distance Driver!

Weary eyes, so tired,
Transfixed on miles of road,
The drone of the engine, his only companion
As he carries his heavy load,
Scheduled arrivals for the long-distance driver
(No time to change into clean clothes),
Constantly racing to reach the location
Against wind, heavy rain, occasional snow!
 
Waking early, arduous journey,
Endless roads to drive,
Hectic pace,, important breaks
Are taken in vacant lay-bys,
Windscreen wipers lull the driver
Into sleepiness as they slide,
Fighting to keep on driving;
The monotony makes him tired!
 
Radio on, humming songs
To occupy the brain,
Melodies put the mind at ease
Especially in the slow lane,
A journey in private for the long-distant driver,
The cab is his sole domain,
Impatient to reach the destination
Chasing the clock on busy highways!
 
A built-in CB, verbal company,
Communications to interrupt silence,
Friendly chats about this and that
As they tend to do on the wireless,
A stranded hitchhiker thumbs the long-distance driver,
He brakes, pulls over, obliges,
Despite the urgency a little courtesy;
Chivalry born out of kindness!
 
A portable tv, homely comforts indeed
To while away empty, lonely evenings,
A kettle, a cooker, salt , pepper, sugar,
Handy for travel convenience,
Roadside diners tempt the long-distance driver;
Sausage, bacon, eggs, hot baked- beans,
A truly welcomed delay from the motorways,
The tailbacks, road maintenance, police!
 
The loading, unloading, non-stop manoeuvring,
Delivery notes dated and signed,
The company`s reputation at each destination
Is vital right down the line,
Welcome the arrival of the long-distance driver,
The successful conquest of his load,
Dispatched as ordered, maybe imported,
Transported down miles of road!
