Macklemore slapped me across the face

As "Same Love" plays over and over again I never got it,

I never really understood it one little bit,

then I took five minutes, well actually seven,

and understood his mockery of a fools heaven,

understood the struggles my cousin and friends have faced,

I never understood the ultimate goal they chased,

Smacked in the face for each time I used gay at the wrong time,

Punched in the gut every time I let someone use it around my friends,

A tear for each time I didn't think the teasing was a crime,

As loyal as a friend I try to be what kind of message did my silence send?

I say I support all types of love and marriage,

Yet I use gay as an off the cuff phrase,

So I guess in the end I also supported the people who put marriage in a cage

and I'm saddened by the fact it took a song to slap me from my daze,

Friends had all that trouble coming out, some didn't until after graduation,

Some didn't want to be shut out while others had the courage to scream it out,

though their parents punished and yelled without a single reservation,

Yet the held the course and filled us all in on what it was all about,

Told us why they liked the same sex and that they were happy,

Isn't that what matters after all?

And the law signed to paper is still kind of crappy,

but I'll take some progress to bring more awareness to the call,

"Same Love" made me further understand how pure the concept of love is,

People who fight against it are just suppressing peoples bliss,

It takes more than a few to change a perception of a generation,

So word needs to be spread to not let another suffer this indignation,

People need to love, we are social creatures who yearn for it,

Just because it's the same sex shouldn't matter a little bit.
