My Blue Heron

my blue heronÂ
as i step into the cold and dark receding,
the trees across the water are as one, without
leaves, their trunks and branches etched in
black, backlit by the rising colors of the sun.
my eyes track to the sky and find egrets
glistening, gliding, their white wings
rising, as they descend in perfect meters
marked, to land and stand and watch,
along the shallows of the river’s bend.
i wait for my blue heron. i will not see her in
flight or as she descends. she comes cloaked
in light, one with the blue sky, a ghost, revealed
only as she stands apart, aloof and tall, beneath
the pine, near the rocks where the water falls.
as she appears, i move close to catch her image,
to tame perfection, to keep her by some means
for my morning dreams. yet, between a breath
and heartbeat, she is gone, no wings aloft, no sign
of her and soon to be, i sense, of me.
my thoughts turn to the One that guides the egrets
and my blue heron here, where beauty and the colors
gently in the morning play, to remind me, that what
remains and what will be, of me and my blue heron,
was by grace born to end, alas, on any given day.

Yo Baker Street! we are still breathing and free!
This is an extraordinarily beautiful poem. It is peaceful yet deep, like still waters, but at the same time it has a ghostly quality. About it. I love it. Pinned to read again x
thank you. i do appreciate you taking the time to leave a note. i may edit this version here from time to time, perhaps make it a smoother read, but read aloud, a decent rending can be found with a few tries. I really appreciate the extra read.Â
You know Mark there is something truly soulful about your writings on birds. I cannot pin down the quality in words I was just amazed to again read this beautiful piece of work...on par with your...
'The Cormorant' ( although The Cormorant) remains one of my personal favourite poems of all time, right up there with the greats. This is now also up there in my list.Â
You are truly one of my favourite writers x
thank you Marion, the beauty and symmetry of the plant and animal kingdoms help me make some sense of the human one:)Â
i may someday change the finishing lines of this one, but will never make any changes to "the comorant". im so glad you like that one!
Such an undervalued bird in my opinion .. Herons in all their many varieties are incredible to watch .. whether patiently poised and waiting to strike, or in their majestic flight ..
Here tho'Â I think you have captured more than the essence of the blue heron and have gone deeper .. much deeper and have used her as a metaphor for something rarely glimpsed by chance but rather needs to be searched for .. but most of all, I thank you kindly Mark, for taking me on a gentle meander along by the river at my most favourite time of day and taking it all in ..Â
Muchly enjoyed my friend .. And with Kindest of Regards, NevilleÂ
Yes, Mark "read aloud" as advised is the best way to appreciate :)
Lovely piece!
Kind regards,
Yiyan

A fab poem with muse and nature interplaying nicely, ending on admirable spiritual notes, to me hinting on the Creator. Kudos!
