My Malignant Muse

My Malignant Muse

My Malignant Muse

Woe are we who willful write to drive away the pain.
Who shun the dark, seek out the light, but do so all in vain.
With all our might we try and fight the odious refrain.
A pallid pox, a baleful blight—muse comes to shout again…

“Get up—arise from tufted bed,
the time has come to write!
For words are swimming in your head
fraught with foul fear and fright.
Now's not the time to act demure,
thoughts must see light of day.
You've no time to be insecure;
write something new... today!”

Thus, I do as I am told to silence his shrill voice.
If I want rest, I must attest, I simply have no choice.
Yet still I find I fall behind, for words are ne'er enough.
Malignant woes, like cancer grows–his threats, they are no bluff.

For days, for weeks, for months on end, I write to please my muse.
I rarely sleep, fall in a heap, if he'd let me, I'd choose
to go to bed before I'm dead and clear my aching head.
Malignancy won't set me free, I'm hanging by a thread.

Thanks, Angel.
I think all of us who feel the need to write often feel this way.
Or, perhaps it's just me.
I appreciate your comments.

Hey PROFESSOR!!...I REALLY like that you used the word 'warfare' as one of the tags for this write!!......I am not one.....but I know of many who speak directly to this subject matter!!... It's the ease with which this piece reads (especially aloud) that sets your poetry apart from the many.... to convey that inner turmoil so poetically, as if you were just jotting down some prose...... excellent work my friend..... and if this is complete truth here I pray that the thread from which you hang is made of the same stuff that Spiderman's web shooter generates!!......LOVE & ROCKETS !!.....T xo ???✴❤???

Hahaha, thanks, "T", and unfortunately there is a lot of truth to this.

I'll no sooner lay down after already having written all day, or worked on getting my poetry manuscript read and polished for publication for my latest book (hopefully out by this Halloween), when a thought will creep into my brain-pan.

Both of my dogs, Gidget, a old grumpy 17-year-old Chihuahua, and Frank E. Furter, my 15-year-old wiener dog, sleep with me and have usually just gotten comfortable. I'll start to toss and turn, and they'll give me soulful look dogs are so good at, like, C'mon, dude! For the love of God, put it to rest and just lay here with us, okay?
I can't, of course–at least not until I get the thought down in some tangible form I can work on further later on.

My current stretch is five days with six hours of sleep.
That's it.
Death☠️Wish Coffee, a very strong coffee available online from Round Lake, N.Y., helps to keep me goin'.

I was just telling Tony that I'm the same way, Cherie.
I'll get up at all hours of the night (if I'm fortunate enough to have fallen asleep at all), and start writing down an idea in a form I can continue to work out later on.
For me, it's not so much that I'm afraid I'll forget the idea as it is I just gotta know how it could pan out when outlined.
Or rather, my muse does, heh-heh.
Thanks so much for reading and for your complimentary comments as well.
Pleasant Screams!
