My Oenophilic Valve
Now that I’m pushing eighty, my body’s been rearranged;
What once was my heart’s main supplier, now is duly changed!
Oh, my aorta still is pumping, the blood it needs to give;
But a new valve provides what it cannot, a reason still to live!
.
I call it my “Oenophilic” one, sending wine from head to toe;
That aids with my digesting, the bad news everywhere I go!
A plague has now beset us, mega millions laying dead;
Mass murders now are daily, by Monster’s Devil bred!
.
There’s war in many countries, suicide bombers running rife;
Commandeered by evil leaders, no regard for human life!
Half the world suffers starvation, verdant gardens now lay bared;
The result of Global Warming, caused by greed of those don’t care!
.
Having witnessed the World at it’s very best, now watching it’s sad demise;
There’s only one thing I look forward to, every morning when I rise!
It’s my “Oenophilic Valve” hard at work, lifting my nadir to a high;
Knowing that I’ll leave the World one day, with a laugh, and not a cry!
.

Hi Larry,Â
wow I think you have highlighted the dark depressive state these recent times have pushed onto so many. I am certain if we ever get out the other side alive still, that there will be a huge call for more therapists to help pick up the aftermath of mental breakdowns. Loved the play with imagery and words here to describe the need to lean on the bottle moreÂ
Great write and many thanks for sharing :)

My Dear Gwendoline,
I tried to make this poem a juxtaposition of depression and humor, not making light of the catastrophic state of our World. I totally agree that if we pull through this, the shrinks couches are going to be full twenty-four seven. Thank you for your insight into my work.
Peace and Love,
