Now I Lay Me Down To Weep

Now I Lay Me Down to Weep
Β
Her baby kicked and screamed all night;
his mom lay strung out in a darkened room.
What had she done to deserve such plight?
Her lover spoke, doused in sweat and cheap perfume.
Β
βMaybe itβs hungry.β the callous creep crooned,
βGo and feed it; Β maybe we can have some peace.β
βHeβs not an βit.β, her pale, sad face rose towards the moon.
βHeβs my baby boyβmy soulβs sweet release.β
Β
Bic lighters touched to the bottom of spoons;
the cold metal grew hot, soon glowing deep red.
Liquefied poisons that made muddled minds swoon.
They took a hot doseβvery soon, each lie dead.
Β
Her baby boy was finally now sound asleep,
his chest rose and fell with each labored breath.
Who would now pray for his soul to keepβ
how would he survive the cruel clutches of death?

This was based on an actual incident, Cherie. My ex-wife is a deputy sheriff. She has no one who will talk to her about the horrors she witnesses every day so she chooses to talk to me about them.
I just listen and take it all in.
Sadly it's an all too real scenario.
Thanks so much for your kind comments.
This is such a sad, cold and cruel world we live in sometimes.
~Dean
Hi Dean, I read Cheries comment before I read the poem. The fact this is a true story doesn't really surprise me....it can be a harsh world we live in, but knowing that this happened by hearing it from your ex wife is something else. Great write about a horrific subject.

I would like to believe our world is all wine and roses, Syd.
I would like to and yet I know it's far from that.
Thanks so much again for reading. I wrote this just after she called and told me what they'd found.
So horrible I can only imagine...

Dean this is so sad it might be fictitious ink but yet, in reality, it happens often. so scary and yet such a somber ink. I adore your pen.
Thanks for reading, Lisa.
This is based on actual events.
My ex-wife is a deputy sheriff and told me how this mother was reported to Children's Services for neglect time and time again, and time and time again the courts kept giving the baby back to her.
Now, both the mother and her baby are dead.
Much obliged for the comments,
~Dean
Very graphic Dean, it breaks my heart that this goes on, I have some very disturbing ideas on how to stop this but they have been met with anger and hate. I think that all heroin and other drugs that is siezed during drug searches by the police should be laced with a drug that makes the user infertile and then put back on the streets and send out warnings that this has been done, hopefully going forward no baby's will be born to drug users. This is just a belief of mine.Β
Each one of us has an idea about how to deal with these sorts of situations, Gerard.
If you think yours is bad you should hear my own.
At the risk of sounding completely cruel and totally insane, I'll refrain for posting it here.
Thanks so much for the read and review. It is appreciated, as always.

Oh wow Dean, this is too sad. Ive known addicts though and this is also way too real. So many neglected babies and children. Very very sad (((
Thank you very much for taking the time to read and comment on this, Ru T.
It's an all too common occurrence and so sad on all fronts.
Peace to you and yours,
~Dean
Hello Dean...
They did their job well once again which has permitted another tragedy...
They children away when they shouldn't...
I've compared their so called system to a crooked Animal Service, I guess things don't change...
My ex-sister-in-law is a Nurse and she worked in the Emergency Room a lot...
She didn't have anyone to talk with either...
Thank you for sharing...
Hugs...

Although she's my ex she will always hold a special place in my heart. So, I can at least listen and allow her to vent once in a while.
I can't imagine holding things like this inside with no one to talk to. That's why so many police officers commit suicide. No one wants to hear nor cares to hear the true to life horror stories they have to tell.
Thanks so much for reading, Sparrowsong.

Hi dean, I to have known too many junkies. It was just so much part of the music scene in the 80's and 90's. The ones that are not now clean are dead. The tragedy is global and this sad masterpiece will have resonance everywhere. Great words.
Nigel
I've known a few myself, Nigel and sadly there is one currently in our family.
He can't be reasoned or bargained with and rehab has done little to stop him.
He's been resuscitated 3 times already this year alone. He's lost everything, including his only daughter.
And still, he continues to shoot up.
So sad; he always was such a smart lad with so much potential.
Thanks so much for reading, my friend.
~Dean
Wow so real an powerful but sad. Many many people face this life and so many more pretend to not see, Such a powerful true write, Makes us think how many others will face this just one person to stand up and help. Wonderful and the truth in this is real. Great Job my friend..
I really appreciate you taking the time to read this and share your thoughts with me about the poem, Kay.
Sadly it's a situation that shows no signs of stopping or slowing down anytime soon.
Hugs!

Hi Dean,
The product of an addicts womb
Now cries for milk across the room
But the only substance the color white
Is the powder on the spoon she lights
.
Then for a few moments of ecstasy
Overdosed, so dead she be
The baby boy, now cried to sleep
His Mother's Soul, the Lord to keep
Peace and Love,
Larry xxx
Thanks for your poetic reply, Larry. That was outstanding!

~Dean
