On Happiness

On Happiness

It's a massive thing, happiness.
It is what we all want,
what we all strive to be.

Happy forever.

We search for it and hunt it down as if it is a giant, lumbering beast in some enchanted forest.
A prize catch, if not today then tomorrow, too big to mistake and too huge to miss.

But it's not that.

For the monumental thing that it is, it is tiny.
Happiness is found within the confines of a moment.
It flits like a butterfly,
darts like a Kingfisher
and covers us like the softest fleece.
Happiness is not the whole of us but a fragment that makes us whole.
It is something to embrace while understanding its transience.
And to find it we must first realise that happiness is not a destination;
it is a currency of the now, not a, "one day, happy ever after."
We shouldn't wait for it, not even if tomorrow does seem hopeful,
because tomorrow doesn't always keep its promises
and there is no such thing as forever.

Aww... Thank you Greg! That's very sweet of you to say. I hope you find someone, I'm sure you will. You have a good and honest heart.

I wanted to write about happiness in general because we often look to happiness as an end. But happiness is around all the time in tiny snippets here and there. It does not last. It ebbs and flows like the tide and we should take it as, when and where we find it.

Thank you for reading and for leaving a lovely, heartfelt comment. Blessings to you, Greg x

Well done cos wouldnt have known it was a challenge!! Good for you. Break all the rules!! I'm just learning about verse and rhyme now!! Px ?

I love every word of this and totally agree with your sentiment. Happiness  can be such an ethereal thing ..like a feeling with wings...it's real and yet sometimes not quite..but always within reach yet ..sometimes just beyond the fingertips..Love this!!!

Again, some beautifully thought out words of wisdom. Happiness is not the destination it has to be found somehow in small things along the journey, at this stage in my life I believe I have found this truth so can relate to your words. Ten minutes alone with the moon on a crisp clear night, or a bedtime story with my grandchildren or a walk with my dogs can fill me with a deep deep contentment...happiness?? I believe so...I no longer trust the big showy prizes. A beautiful write my friend ...hugs ?

Marion... You understand so well what I was getting at!  I am so glad you can relate to this. I know of a person who once told me, many years ago, that he will only ever be happy once he has a business which employs a thousand people and his own yacht in the Mediterranean.  And I said to him then that he needed to focus on the now or he might end up going to his grave having never been happy.  My comment didn't go down too well. But he still has no yacht in the Med and he doesn't employ a single person... So I guess he is still not happy. I feel sad for people like that. My kids, my dog, the sunshine they all make me happy.

Thanks for reading. I'm sorry it took me so long to reply x

Aww I really like how this ends and I think it is especially poignant for the time being.
When there is so much death, poverty and fear immediately around it tends to force us into the now, to cherish the simple things and the ones we love.
However bad things get, something good always comes from it somewhere x
Amazing!

Thank you so much!  I really appreciate the support.

I think it is sometimes easy to forget about the small simple things. It is to easy to dismiss a smile for the promise of a whole huge heap of happy in the future. But the future is a precarious thing to gamble on. Today is what matters and a simple smile is priceless. The times we now find ourselves in really accentuates the importance of being happy with what we have got now.

Thank you again. Keep smiling 😊 x

Its a good thing in life to read and enjoy other peoples poetry.
And when its unique, absorbing and uplifting it a breath of fresh air and a poetry bonus.
Great poem, great theme and a great fresh spin on happiness, so sorely needed today .
Thanks Being Me and will catch up with more tomorrow.
Take care and thanks again.

This is utterly. BRILLIANT !

happiness is not a destination;
it is a currency of the now, not a, "one day, happy ever after

such epic words that make so much sense !! I loved the entire thing. Yes we should live in the moment because we only get NOW once. We might not get later we never know. Such wise words throughout this fabulous thought provoking read :) x

Thank you so much Gwen. I was pondering happiness because it seems to escape our grasp too easily. And after pondering this is what I came up with. It is true, the NOW is indeed all we have. Memories are echoes (ones we need to replay over and over)  and tomorrow is risky in any market. So very glad you like this. Again, apologies for my extremely late reply xx
