A Shetland Pony

Daddy, I said I wanted a pony,
and I suppose that I ought to be glad,
but daddy, you bought me a shetland —
and one that's awfully bad.
There is no way I can ride him,
my legs are far too long,
and the lady who told you he'd drive
was obviously very wrong.
The pony won't do anything.
He's lazy, he's fat (okay, I admit he's cute)
but the only way I can catch him
is if I bribe the brute.
Daddy, I really wanted a pony
to gymkhana, showjump or hack
but you went and bought me a shetland —
a mean one, all shaggy and black.
It's not that I don't love him
but he's taken a dislike to me,
and when he bares his yellow teeth
I'd rather leave him be.
Daddy, you said I could have a pony
If it was hardy and cheap to keep;
a New Forest would've been better
'Cos this shetland has made me lose sleep!
Now, having said all this,
I really don't want him sold,
his eyes look so honest and true —
he thinks he's as good as gold!
(very tongue in cheek. In style of Sir John Betjeman's pony club poems.)

It's lighthearted, witty, and endearing—a delightful twist on childhood desires. J'adore!
Thankyou so much, Nika! I'm so glad you liked the read x
You've written at last!! About bloody time 😊😁 and I'm loving this different style my friend in which you describe being dissapointed, awed, terrorised and challenged in a lovely lightheared way by the object of your desires. ( and what could better prepare a child for life in the human zone lol) I have limited knowledge of ponies but the shettie to me has always seemed to be the one that doesn't do well with the bullshit of humans lol. A fabulous work Tina... thoroughly enjoyable 💕
Thankyou for your kind words. I am wanting another shetland pony in my life right now. I am actually desperate for one! A shetland or a dartmoor, either or... I wouldn't mind a dartmoor.or ... actually a little welsh sec A . hmmmm
my excuse is ...it's for the grandchildren ... I am hoping there will be more so a pony now is the way to go ... in my head at least! Rob will come home one day and I will be like ...oh, how's your day been? Guess what? I bought a pony. BUT ... I will probably buy a surprise guinea pig first ...see how well that goes down ...hmmmm. I'm thinking on the page here! Anyway, I digress. I love ponies. Thank you for humouring me by reading my poem here. 🙏Thankyou x
I'm not humouring you... you have always had a talent for writing. If you've the money...buy the pony. Life's too short. X
❤️
lol ok I'll take him, you can visit when you want, so true that the eyes of animals you can see deep within their souls, especially dogs and horses. This is gorgeous, tell daddy I'd like a Cherokee Jeep please (wink) 🤣
Hahaha...if only I had a daddy that could provide things like that! Many moons ago I rescued a black shetland pony stallion. He was awesome. He taught hundreds of children how to ride and I kept him all his days. He had his moments (dont they all!).... which inspired me to write this poem. So glad you like the poem.
Thankyou, Shirley, for reading and leaving such a great comment!
Do you have a name for you pony, Being Me? You can always ''put the cart
before the horse.'' Sometimes it's a good idea. Hugs, B
He had a rather special name! Archibald Henry McFerguson Scott — Archie for short. He was a wonderful little guy and very much loved. He was the inspiration for this poem, along with the spoilt brats I've seen in the pony world (thank God not all pony children are like that), and the pony club poems that SirJohn Betjeman wrote.
Thankyou very, very much for reading and I love your comment ... nice one! Thanks again x
Tina! That was fantastic! You are so much fun, and your beautiful heart always shows in your writes. I loved that! Matthew.
Thankyou Matthew! How kind you are! Glad you like the poem. X
I am so bloomin glad I checked to see whether you had finally found your keyboard, pen and muse .. this is quite simply delightful .. and when I don my much much much younger hat .. I truly truly truly get it ..
Hahaha...tis another old one, I'm afraid. I'm having a go at writing at the moment. Something Marion requested. I said I'd try — and trying I am. Suddenly I am finding poetry so difficult 🤷♀️
Thankyou for checking out my page. And thankyou for reading and leaving your thoughts. Valuable things are thoughts. A huge Thank you, my dear friend x
Blimey, I thought I had visited all your portfolio .. x
Dear Tina,
You have "ponied up" a heart-touching insight into the core of a youth.
It deserves a Haiku.
I had a Shetland
Bringing to me love and fear
Alas, love won out
Peace and love,
Larry xxx
