One Carnival day

One Carnival day

It's carnival season again in Trinidad and tobago
And the whole country is in a party atmosphere
With lots of foreigners and tourist from around the world
Having the time of their life's with sweet steel pan and soca music everywhere

Trinidad and Tobago people like to enjoy their selfs
Its just the nature of who a true trini are
And if some dont go downtown to play mas
Then you will them on the beach or cooking down by the river

They all cooking drinking bathing in the river
The little children playing and having fun
Trinidadians are a very friendly people
They all like to live together as one

Every year for carnival my mind takes me back to a long time ago
On the steps of grant memorial school where i met the most beautiful girl
And it’s a day that I will always remember
A memory thats forever embedded in my soul

Her name was sheriza Mohammed
she had long hair with the most beautiful face and smile
I was 15 years old and was too shy to go and talk to her
So I just stood by the wall looking at her all the while

I was with my brother Izzy and Shirley Johnson brother Krishna
It was Krishna who showed me her that carnival day
And she was the most beautiful sight I ever seen
A sight that will remain in my mind and never go away

I keep looking at her.. then she looked at me and smile
And at the moment all my shyness just went away
I went and sit next to her and said ' hi could I sit here"
And we end up being together the whole day

She came carnival with her sister and her sister's boyfriend
And her feet were hurting her so she's sitting here waiting for her
So I kept her company until her sister and boyfriend came back
And to my suprise the boyfriend was capil gayadeen from the gayatone orchestra

We all knew the gayatones very well from usine
When we goes to the mosque we use to stop to see them playing
They lives in the same street by the mosque
And every night they use to be practicing

We then hold hands and decide to walk around
Untill it was time for her to go home that night
And I stood there looking at her
As she wave bye to me and taxi drove out of sight

We made plans to meet on the next monday after school
We were going to meet at San Fernando liberty corner
I was working at Ram Mohess tailoring on top of lord street
I couldnt leave early and reach late and didnt see her

I thought its ok " I will see her tomorrow
Then I came tomorrow and stood for hours waiting
And I came back every day at the library corner
But faith would have it ..that I would never see her again

We become so close in the few hours on carnival day
So close that we were holding hands by that evening
Not knowing it would be our first and last time
And that we was never going to meet again

I know she told me she didnt travel to school
And maybe she got the chance to meet on that Monday
And because I had to work late
That chance has forever gone away

I still went every evening at the liberty corner
With her beautiful face always on my mind
And though it’s been so many many years ago
Up till today I still think of her all the time

Many years after I leave trinidad
I was working by enjo when my friend
Errol
was telling me about the gayatones and capil
He was telling me how they are his close family
And I told him the story about the girl I met and still remembers till this day

And I couldn’t believe when he told me that he knows her
He was at capil and her sister wedding day
And the girl sheriza Mohammed calls him uncle
Then he told me how her sister " capils wife" had gotten sick and pass away

It was very sad to hear about her sister passing
And its was unbelievable that Errol knows her
I still remember her face as if it was just yesterday
For one carnival day, we met ,fell in love and get lost forever

Errol said that he would find out her number for me
Then he got sick and didnt work again
He moved to some where in new jersey
And his number change when i try calling him

I still hope for a miracle to see her beautiful face again someday
But I won’t recognize her if i see her today for sure
And no matter where in this that world I may go
My heart will always return to the steps of grant school every carnival once more

The Gayatones is an Indian orchestrator from usine.ste madeleine
Today they are one of the best orchestras in Trinidad and the world
And though a lot has happen throughout my life's journey
She’s the one memory that when I remember her. It will always make me sad

I wish I knew what happen to her
I don't know if she's here or if she's gone
But I do know one thing for sure
that In my heart her beautiful smile will always live on

Trini!  Kaz, this is a sweet story, man....hey, I hope you find she, one day.  I saw references to San Fernando, been there a few years back; for the first time.  I was born in Port of Spain, Morvant, Matapal street; yes, where all the madness is, lol...my uncle Reggie, still lives there....left when I was a boy, still have memories of Market school, down by Lady Young road....wow, Carnival in Trinidad is one of the wildest in the world, only been in it once in my life, but it was memorable, lol.... can still remember the sound of the steel pan from down the road, maybe Morvant junction, had to sneak away as a boy to even get near it, my grandmother was strict SDA....good write, my friend, lots of flavour and charm, a bit sad, but keep the faith, maybe one day....thanks for bringing back some nice memories of the homeland, enjoyed....like this pull quote, cheers....

And we end up being together the whole day
