Only Nine

Only Nine

We were so alike, and yet completely different.
You were my best friend, my confidant
I was only nine when all I saw was your back
I was only nine when our roads parted
You came back when I was only ten
You came back to make yourself feel better, but I sure didn't feel better
I was only eleven when I learned your ways and only twelve when I picked my fallen pieces back up again
I was only thirteen when I ran from you and only fourteen when all I saw was back again
I was only fifteen once, but you didn't seem to see my face then
I was only sixteen when I began to cry
I was only seventeen in the blink of an eye
Graduation passed and I saw your eyes, but you didn't see mine, all you saw was a fake smile as I barely made it to the stage without tears streaming my makeup
I was nine once and nine years later I'm eighteen and moving on.
