Over The Barley Field

Β
Their walks were measured by foot and paw
Through four seasons they made their way,
Stopping below the Barley field
Always there they would call it a day
Β -
She had to stop every now and then
To wait for the pain to subside,
Concerned, he walked so close to her
He would never stray from her side
Β -
She did her best to make the top of the hill
It was harder and harder each day,
Then one day it was far too much
And her world began to sway
Β -
The dog was puzzled when the woman stopped
And she leaned heavily on her cane,
He knew something was wrong as they turned around
You see she never spoke again
Β -
Arriving home, their shadows grew longer
As the day began to yield,
The dog glanced back at the orange sky
As it sank into the field
Β -
Three long weeks he pined for her
As he stayed at her friends homestead
When she came back home, his excitement grew
As he bounded off his bedβ¦
Β -
He saw there was a change this time
She just didnβt seem the same,
He knew he had to look after her
And so much closer they became
Β -
He remembered the walks of yesteryear
Alas, just to the woods theyβd go,
He longed to bound in the barley field
But he tried not to let it show
Β -
Because time and fate had turned things around
And his age had leapt over hers,
She knew it was time and carried him down
As his legs couldnβt handle the stairs,
Β -
He slept in her arms one final time
As crying she stroked his head,
Β From above he looked down and felt such love
As she lay next to him on his bed
Β -
He knew deep down heβd see her again
Of that he truly believed,
So he waited for her, ever so patiently
At the top of the barley field.

My Dear John,
As I read this heart wrenching beautiful poem, I had to stop twice, and wipe the tears from my eyes.
So I give you this poem in it's response, my dear doggie loving friend.
Her ever faithful doggie, walked with her each day;
To the top of the old "Barley Hill", just past the stacks of hay!
But one day she swayed and rocked a bit, he knew something was wrong;
Then she left his side for three whole weeks, each hour for her he longed!
.
Finally she came back home, he jumped up and down for glee;
But she would never be herself again, that he could easily see!
So even though he pined for Barley Hill, by the woods is all they'd go;
He'd bark as if he was so happy, ne'er he'd let his anxiety show!
.
Yet a few years later, roles were switched, time had changed both of their place;
It was his day now, to leave her side, a horror she had to face!
She slept with him for one last time, her heart and Soul tears spilled;
She laid his body down to rest, now he waits for her atop of "Barley Hill!
All my love,
Larry xxx
Thank you Larry, a wonderful tribute, I'm so glad you liked it.
It was a challenge to write and took a while but was worth it in the end when I get comments like yours and from other fine poets on here.
