Conviction

Previous

It never really goes away
No matter what you do
No matter just how far you've come
It simply shadows you.

It may slip from your conscious thought
May let you start to hope
Before it rips the floor beneath
And comes once more to gloat.

It won't release you from its grasp
It hides where secrets tuck
Only there when life seems good
A portent of bad luck.

It weighs your heart with sadness
Knows it can destroy
It doesn't want repentance
It wants to steal your joy.

I bet it never crossed your mind
The actual consequence
Of what your actions had unleashed
The cruelest recompense.

You thought your punishment was done
Thought you'd cleared your slate
You didn't understand
It's now the master ofΒ your fate.
