Raven

Comes a raven dark and leery,
Harbinger death so dreary.
Perched on a rustic headstone,
Monument name unknown.
Β
Sleek, pitch feathers sublime,
Telltale me, I'm out of time.
Echoes through still solemn trees,
Prayers unanswered on my knees.
Β
Midnight chimes witching hour,
From foul shadows, I cower.
I beg the raven for more time,
Beady eyes judge me for my crime.
Β
Grim creeps with a foggy wake,
I pray my soul the Lord will take.
Pointing emaciated finger of bone,
Engraving my name in stone.

Hey, Lisa.
So begins Edgar Allan Poeβs βThe Raven,β the perfect poem for depicting the darkness associated with ravens. A dark tale of death β¦ about a grieving lover haunted, taunted, by the hovering presence of a raven. Quite a nasty reputation for an animal thatβs actually wicked smart.
How intelligent?
βI would say as intelligent as great apes or dolphins,β claims Rebecca Sturniolog, a curator at the Smithsonianβs National Zoo in Washington, DC.
She feels that ravens get a bad rap.
But why?
The deep black of the feathers, their doll-like eyes that seem like theyβre always watchingβunblinkingβthen there's the fact that they are always around dead things because theyβre scavengers.
They like to pick at corpses.
That doesn't help their reputation, of course.
There is absolutely nothing to pick at in this stunning poetic piece. It's perrrrrrrrfect!
