Rhapsody of the Sun

Rhapsody of the Sun

Drowning in a rhapsody of sunbeams,
Penetrating heat it softens ground.
Absorbing every ray as down it streams,
Burning beads beat on without a sound.
The smell of toasting flesh distills the air,
Bronzing goddess just for vanity’s sake.
Withering in the sun's intense stare,
Stillness we do lie in beauties wake.
Lining up the beaches as we bask,
Reveling in summers special treat.
Applying extra sun-creams (such a task)
Leathering the skin like hardened meat.
Leaving it too late to come inside,
Yearning just for sun-kissed perfection.
Waiting for the burning to subside,
Devastating is that freckle......on reflection.

Hey LÔRNA!!.....this is not only VERY poetic piece..... but intrinsic value here as well..... too much sun leads to cancer and other medical conditions.... but we, as a society, idolize the sun and its egotistically revered beauty enhancing qualities...... I'm sorry but, a suntan looks good, but NOT worth the risks in the long run!!..... this a beautifully delivered warning!!....ALL STARS!!.....I think I'm in love with your mind sweet poetess!!...... you've been making some great choices in subject matter...,,, you go girl!! (smiles)....,.LOVE and ROCKETS!!......T xo ?☀✴✳

Oh Wow... Thanks Tony, Its been unusually hot in the north east over the past few days, and the amount of people I have noticed, just baking...seemingly unaware or just uncaring of the risks, wandering around with blistering red skin....urrghh
so I thought I write about it
Your comments are very kind and as always I really appreciate them ....PS if you could see inside my mind, you'd find where Chaos lives and breathes :D...you'd go insane pretty quickly....( I did) hahaha

Withering in the sun's intense stare

From the ancient cults of Sol Invictus and Ra, to those pasty Europeans (we all do it...it's not just Geordies!!) who throw off their winter coats and run out into the garden at the first sight of the Spring sunshine, humans have been worshipping our nearest star; in one way or another: since the very beginning.
The Sun is probably the most reproduced image/idea in all art, all ages and all cultures...it, almost invariably, symbolizes the divine, the apex of nature and the cosmos and the essence of the life-force in us and in all living things.

I love your contribution to this long tradition.
Of course, as with all true art (not to mention suntans and sunburns!!) there are other layers beneath the surface...peeping out.
On the surface, this is a poem about modern sun-worship and the dangers thereof...but this is also a very subtle meditation on the dangers of idealised love and sexual obsession; the signs are oblique and need to be viewed from a particular angle...but they're there!!

In short...this is an exquisite, clever and beautifully rendered piece of writing...one of your best!!

Divine!!

My Dear Lorna,

The "Rhapsody of the Sunshine" plays
Luring ardent worshipers to its powered rays
They see perfection with tones of bronze
Some overdo it, from dusk to dawn

For the lotions they're using with a high SPF
Lose protection real quickly, as the sun brings on sweat
Then this tan they are seeking, turns to burn in its stead
The "Rhapsody of Sunshine", sometimes should be dread

Hugs, Peace and Love,
Larry xxx

Hi Lorna,  I don't like the sun lol ?.  So I don't need sun tanning oil.  On the contrary, I use an umbrella to protect my skin from burning ##funny how people think differently: the white want to be brown,  the black or white want to be white ## in Asia whitening and bleaching soaps and cremes are popular and making an enormous amount of money!!
a great ink and so original ##

Hugs and kisses

Hi Leah, yes I agree many people strive to be different from what they are, I sometimes wish we could care less about the outside and more about our emotional well being....people put their heath at risk just for the sake of it..thanks for your comments
I really appreciate them

Important write to highlight risk, which is structured in a way to maximize effect on those in greatest jeopardy. This is a caring work making people find out facts about skin conditions coming from too much exposure to sunshine. Meaningful poetry indeed !
Powerful message delivered in an efficient manner.
Well written.
Take care.  X
