Separate

Separate

Did my eyes haunt your thoughts
Long after you knew me?
I can understand it
Years later
That I let you in
I put it to the page
Let you read til your fingers were stained
And then I took it all away

I can understand
Years later
That I stole your thoughts
And turned mine off
I left you on another sheet
Collecting dust
Like it was nothing

And I think about it
But only now
You haven't crossed my thoughts
As bits and pieces of me
Come back into my head

I'm not really sorry
Hell, I don't know if I've ever been
The only things I kept were the words
Stacks in books, torn pages, and little notes I left in my wake

Something changes when you Separate
Selectively
I chose to leave one behind
And keep the other to myself

Nobody was good enough
In the face of my unwavering uncertainty
The clear lines
The black and white
Because I left behind the color

Traded it in for ink
Left pages in my wake
Stained a little piece of everyone I touched
Left them black
