Sinister Circus

Sinister Circus

A circus silently rolled through town,
causing folks here to curse the ground
where they toiled to stage their ghastly show.
They passed us, demonic eyes aglow β€”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Β
No jugglers, tight ropes nor funny clowns,
not a single living soul around.
None certain of their rueful intent,
tho' some sensed these "things" from hell were sent.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Diabolical debauchery– some surmised.
Malevolent menagerie, undisguised...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Barker's visage – terrifying scene!
His demonic minions danced, would sing;
luring everyone into cavorts of death β€”
A performance designed to steal your breath.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Β
Like nothing we'd e'er seen before,
a pale, gaunt horrid troubadour
raised yon, one bony arm towards the sky...
when, suddenly, from osseous hands did fly β€”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Β
Metaphysical mastery, it seemed,
in dead eyes, unholy forces gleamed;
demanded the townsfolk's expiation,
or face eternal Hell's damnation.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Β
A boisterous, billowing wall of flame,
within the midst from whence it came;
all manner of devilish succubi β€”
sang their damning lullaby.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Β
Like Pied Piper's rats led to the slaughter β€”
mothers, fathers, sons and daughters,
entered into the towering pyre,
consumed by wanton lusts desire.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Β
Epochs of such epic proportions!
Creatures squirmedβ€”horrific contortions,
'til all 'twas left β€” dark crimson mist,
evaporated like grain churned to grist.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Β
The spot remains where they succumbed,
if you're caught near, soon back they'll come,
β€” unsatisfied, not with young or old,
as they feel, you too, might be cajoled.
Β ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Β
Locals claim this Greatest Hell on Earth
is a show to shun, the cost not worth
the price you'll pay before the dawn
lest you forget... the show must go on.
Ray Bradbury's tale was precisely what I had in mind when writing this poem, L. Barto. That's very observant of you.
Thank you very much for reading and commenting.
I do appreciate it.
Brilliantly dark Dean. It reads like a a good horror film with no happy ending. I particularly liked this verse.
Like Pied Piper's rats led to the slaughter β€”
mothers, fathers, sons and daughters,
entered into the towering pyre,
consumed by wanton lusts desire.
Loving the rhythm to this piece too. Great poem - SydΒ
I really appreciate you taking the time to drop by and offer your thoughts on this poem, Syd.
I think the picture I chose might have scared off most potential readers, LOL.
Much obliged, my friend.
You're very welcome Dean. I like the picture. I'm glad you like my comment. I'm not very good at leaving reviews and a lot of the time I don't think my comments do the poems much justice, but you'll just have to trust me. If I've pinned it then I think it's brilliant, I just can't find the right words most times.
I truly appreciate anything anyone has to say about my work, Sydβ€”no matter what.
Constructive criticism or praise, both are equally important to me.
I'm here to inspire, to learn, and to improve, and to help others do the same, if at all possible.
The comments you've left me have been a great inspiration and I thank you for that.
Thanks for taking the time to check this out and comment, Lisa. I deeply appreciate your review.
A good friend of mine was once a clown in a circus based out of Michigan. He's no killer or anything like that, but he is a strange dude who's into some weird things.
I think one of the prerequisites to being a clown is you have to be a bit "off" in the old brain pan.
Horror Hugs!
