Sliding into Alcoholism

Was he an alcoholic?
The fact he was questioning this
Meant that something
Must be up:
Although he had long
Enjoyed the taste
Of an ale
He often had too much.

And it was funny in a way
That he had
“Given up” drinking
On numerous occasions
And yet temptation-
Or lack of willpower-
Had always
Resulted in a quick
Return to drinking.

He found it puzzling
That alcohol:  So unhealthy
Was also so addictive
Perhaps drink is
Like the devil
Disguised as God:
The Devil’s drink
And it would

Be noble, he thought
To kick the habit
But then the only
Friends he saw
Were in the pub
Though…
He supposed that
He could go and
Not drink.

Yes:  That’s what
He would do-
Or try to do.
