Poem -

A Sober Thought

Its a Saturday morning
And when you open up your eyes
They’re clear and they’re blue,
It’s a sober sign.

You hold me, you smile
We laugh outside.
You’ve forgotten all your sorrows
For this moment your mine.

But then you light that first joint
And you have that first beer,
That one who woke up
You won’t see him in the mirror.

Your once clear eyes
Begin to get glazed,
You start to lose yourself
In a deep and haunted haze.

You talk of others wrongs
You dwell in your past.
It’s the end of your night
You’re not coming back.

It hurts worst when the haze takes you
And you yell and place blame.
You don’t listen to my words (or hear my silent plea)
And then it’s me who feels shame.

You mean it when you say you love me
I mean it when I say it too.
But I want to hear it sober.
I want to hear it come from you.
