So...You Wanna Be a Soneteer?

So...You Wanna Be a Soneteer?

O', be not proud or prone to discontentβ€”
would Shakespeare’s sonnets have e'er graced the page
had plays like Romeo and Juliet
not lent iambic meter to the stage?

Β
Sir Thomas Wyatt wrote with great panache
about a hunt set deep within the wood.
It left the novice hunter in the washβ€”
his weary buttocks chaffed and rough as wood.

Β
Though there are many ways to pen a poem,
a sonnet must adhere to certain rules.
And should one stray too far away from home,
a sonnet needs rebuilt, with proper tools.

Β
If iambic meter did ne'er exist,
imagine all the wondrous works we’d miss.
