Spoken Word - Dance In My Heart

I stare in the mirror and true to genetics, the features of my father stare back.
I used to wonder if my mother hated me…
I knew she didn’t…
But as my tiny face and hands
Grew into a man
That ruined her life…"Reason"…
Took a backseat to "Logic"
So somewhere in-between
Monday night beatings and
Friday night cookoutsÂ
I learned to be still-
And kill-
Every notion of
Every emotion
That dared to motionÂ
My little heart to MOVE-
To groove to the beat of its own drum-
Where someone would someday dance
In its rhythms
And forget the schismsÂ
That whisper, “I own you"-
Until the day they whisper back, “I own you”

Look on the bright side...
At least you were liked when you were...
A BABY...
My mother claimed her life was Hell the moment I was
Conceived...
