Star Envy

Here in the land of the free

We are all created equal

At least in theory

For the bask
of the warm spotlight
always shines
on the chosen elite

Blessed be the wealthy
for they
have inherited the Earth

All doors open
for these famous few

Fawned over by their
sycophant minions
we emulate all that they do

Fighting over ourselves
to hear and debate
whatever drivel
these idols have to say

What designer threads they wear

What product shampoo applied
to their soft shiny hair

and yet

tis not the fault
of these false idols
we deem to worship
with our glitter cult
of hypocrisy 

They are as we all
just playing their parts
in the freak show of life

The cycle of hype
we heap
on our feet of clay celebrities
is a much needed distraction
from our desperately mundane lives
