Star Monkeys
Stardust creatures sprung from seas
With intertwining destinies
But individuals, nonetheless
Survivors of evolutions test
From murkey seas they crawled on land
With moonstruck eyes, and busy hand
Whose brief light flickers out too soon
Their destiny is dust and ruin
They build, they write, they mourn their dead
They sing, they paint, the ground flows red
Their beauty, truth and dignity
Matched only by their cruelty
So ignorant, and yet so wise
Ejaculated from the skies
Evolved within terrestrial womb
Their home, their subsistence, their tomb
They built machines, and planes, and cars
These little monkeys from the stars
Composed amazing symphonies,
And yesterday they lived in trees
From protein strands to DNA
A million years seems just a day
These brave explorers, sprung from the seas
Who dropped their tails, and fell from trees
How tragic..they must recognize
That all that lives, eventually dies
How sad they're smart enough to know
From whence they came and where they’ll go!
