In a State of Ruination

In a State of Ruination

I used to be a living soul
I used to be able to breathe.
I was a being with goals
The future, I used to be able to see.

Bit by bit, I was torn apart
I lent myself to everyone
Because it meant that I had a heart
But didn't think of me in the long run.

Pieces of me, people did steal
And they left me aching
And I found that I could not deal.
I felt myself breaking,

Here I am today
A shadow of my old self;
A shade.
My life placed on a shelf.

I feel ragged and worn out
Like an ancient scarecrow
Empty and cast about
Like I'm withered and dead; I cannot grow.
