Suffragette

Suffragette

I heard feet
Thousands upon
Thousand of feet
Marching
Through the streets.

Scores of women
The streets brimming
Banners held high
Women ready to defy.

Together with one voice
Making their choice
Their call one benign
Facing the blue line.

Womenโ€™s voice hushed
The blue line pushed.
Battered and crushed
By horses rushed.

Downtrodden
But not forgotten
Limp bodies bloodied
And sullied.

And still they stood
the batons withstood
thousands of voices raised
courage be praised.

I heard feet
thousands of feet
marching strong
through the streets.

Still calling
for deeds, not words
the cry, Ever onwards!
To the House of Lords
