The Ballad of the Old Grave Digger
![The Ballad of the Old Grave Digger](https://cosmofunnel.com/sites/default/files/styles/full/public/2019-02/162242142925.jpg?itok=6c0fv7Vt)
His old flat cap and trusty spade,
He knew that heβd been blessed
For some poor souls had lost their kin
And would lay them here to rest
-
His muscles ached heβd dug enough, heβd finish in the morn
His wife would put his supper in the oven, to keep it nice and warm
Six feet down he wiped his brow and took off his old cap
It wouldnβt hurt, who would know? heβd have a little nap
-
Forty winks couldnβt hurt,
As he got himself comfortable in the dirt
Well forty turned to many more
As throughout the night he dreamed and snored
-
Still half asleep, he stirred in the ground
As the Vicar and mourners gathered around,
But someone saw the tip of his spade
So they slowly closed around the grave,
Startled as one, they screamed and jumped back!
As out of the ground flew and old flat cap!β¦
-
His wife was just glad to see him
As he relayed to her his strange story
They knew it was time to call it a day
He hadnβt covered himself in glory
-
He soon retired and hung up his spade
But his reputation got bigger,
He would forever be known throughout the small town
As the sleeping old grave digger.

My Dear John,
This is a beautifully written piece with a humorous twist.
I guess grave digging is one job you don't want to fall asleep on.
Love,

Thank you Larry for your kind wordsΒ
Wow!! Sir ASTLEY!!... so glad I happened to catch this one..... that was a great read!!...... you nailed this poetically with your perfect sense of poetic rhythm and timing throughout...... not such an easy thing to do is the telling of a humorous, almost fable-like narrative within the confines of poetic rhyme scheme!!..... but you've accomplished it BEAUTIFULLY here!!......ALL STARS!! & PINNED!!...... well conceived and BEAUTIFULLY delivered!!.......LOVE & ROCKETS!!......T xo ?β΄β€
