The Bell Jar (based on the book by Sylvia Plath).

Cowered in the bell jar,
Suffocate in my own stench,
Breathe and re-breathe the same toxicity,
The landscape never changes.
Sometimes I feel it lifted,
And for a fleeting moment I see,
Colours like I've never known,
And then I'm on a comedown.
Back to reality,
Savour the oxygen,
It won't be long now,
Before the air is heavy again.
Burning my lungs,
Ringing in my ears like a spoon to the surface,
Stop this madness,
Or aren't you strong enough?
Docile, flaccid people,
Walking round in circles,
No progression,
No ascension.
Why am I in a position to judge?
Squatting under opaque shelter,
Don't look my way as you pass,
I am but sickly, breathing hate.
Sometimes I wish I was human,
Then I could be oblivious,
I could eat the fruit you cultivate,
And spew it out in chunks.
I wish I could show you,
How I sneer at your being,
Then you could see,
What it's like to really live.
The nauseating thoughts,
Constant irritation,
Over sensitivity to sound,
Obsessions you could not imagine.
Skin, bony notches, sticky eyes,
Raise your glasses,
Everybody's pretending to be happy,
It couldn't get any worse.
It's the insomnia,
The foggy space,
The beings who think they are relevant,
Or part of Gods Great Plan.
Wake up little insects,
Or are you scared?
You could always come in here with me,
So you can taste life's tar.

amazing poem, Samantha, I haven't read that particular book by Sylvia Plath but I have read many of her poems and her biography, she was one of the great poets of the twentieth century though her life was tragic, you did stellar work her, beautifully formatted with powerful imagery, great write inspired by a great poet, cheers

Lorna, I have a feeling you would love this book. I clung to every sentence in an attempt to understand the deeper meaning. She was such a talent. Thank you for taking the time to read and comment xx
