The bird and the tree

The bird and the tree

There lay a bird
upon a tree
that stood over
the rolling sea

Then a man came
to chop it down
and that bird said
with furrowed frown

This is my tree
more than yours
us birds and pets
with claws and paws

Use the tree
to rest upon
and shade under –
so shoo – be gone

The leaves and branches
on that tree
clapped and cheered
and said with glee;

That’s the way
to tell who’s boss
without our tree
we’d all be lost

The tree stayed silent
until now
then, with grace
he moved his brow

And said; without
your help today
doom would spread
and stain the day

The air and sea
and nature’s own
would lose their fight
to keep their home

So I send my thanks
to you, my friend –
I know we’ll win out
in the end.
