The Brave Boys of Normandy

The Brave Boys of Normandy

Brave Boys of Normandy
In remembrance

 We braved the walls of waves in droves
so far across the sea.
As mounting terror now arose,
we'd fight for victory.

Recruits poured in from far and wide;
each knew that God was on their side
to help us quell the Nazi tide

 so people could live free.

Our LCPs soon hit the shore;
the doors fell open wide,
as hails of bullets rent and tore;
so many good men died.

β€œGo lads!” was screamed above the squall
β€œMay God be with you, one and all!”
Yet hundreds more were soon to fall

before we left the sea.

The Nazi guns were dug in deep;
such chaos they would causeβ€”
as inch by inch, we crawled and creeped
reminded of this clause:

β€˜Wherever evil reigns supreme
beneath a fascist’s foul regime
we’ll squash all hatred so extreme…

God bless our righteous cause!’

One by one, the batteries fell;
the Huns were on the run.
β€œHey, boys, let’s send β€˜em back to Hell;
we’ve got it, lads, they're done!”

 As I gazed out across the beach
where bloodied bodies lay in heaps,
I wondered if peace could be reached.

 When would this war be won?

The war did endβ€”we went back home,
to shattered hopes and dreams.
Still, I return to red soaked loam,
my soul’s still there, it seems.

At seventeen, I went to war.
Now Hitler’s Third Reich is no moreβ€”
I learned to hate, but little more,

still haunted by the screams…
