The Brown Emoji

The Brown Emoji

I said it was black, he said: 'No, it's brown,'
'Oh, sorry,' you never quite know what's going down;
I'm called up, amongst hearts and praying hands,
as though I've been re-positioned from exotic lands.

I hope my yellow smiling friends give me some space,
they always nudge me up because I have a different face,
I could tell you a story when they wouldn't let me in,
it's alright for you - you've never been moved to a bin.

Amongst old photos, discarded kisses and broken hearts,
couldn't make it all out, when love stops and happiness starts,
suddenly I'm wanted, no one used me like this before,
after all this time, it seems that I'm needed more and more.

My old friend, Martin Luther King said that it would be done,
black or brown, we knew that one day we shall overcome.
