The Day I Saved The Leader

This was a funny day, I kid you not, but I saved a life in May,
It was an election in the 22nd century, all the psycho's were out this day,
Unlike elections of olden days, you could vote from the comfort of your home,
It didn't matter where you lived, from the mountains to the crashing foam.
It was me and another guy Eddie Watts, who were guarding the Leader elect,
We were here until the counting was done, just in case anyone were to object,
With the ferals out and the psycho's too, gunfire was heard downstairs,
And down along the corridor, us guards broke off into pairs.
So here we were both Eddie and I, standing in the Leader's doorway,
We were both amped up and ready for it, would they get past us no way,
We heard some shouting pretty close, as the psycho's came round the bend,
It will be interesting to see how far they get, we'll have to wait for the skimish end.
Guards were dropping, psycho's too, these fanatics were not here for fun,
A big muscley psycho dude came around the corner with a laser gatling gun,
There goes Tim and Brian and Rachel too, holes in their bodies where their life had been,
Eddie Watts started blatting away, through the smoke we were hardly seen.
The psycho's numbers were dwindling, they were still getting through the other guards,
But they were certainly edging closer, I approximate twenty or so yards,
Eddie and I were still firing, the door above us was getting blasted bigger,
Thank the Lord that we weren't still standing, I said to myself with a snigger.
I turned to look at Eddie, he had let out a wet cough,
The hole in his neck was spurting blood, then his head was blown clean off,
I dug my heels in and kept on firing, any second now and I will be gone,
I can hear the guns shooting point blank range, they'll be on me before too long.
All of a sudden my arm dettached with my gun skidding across the floor,
The pain of it was so intense, I really could stand no more,
I layed down next to Eddie, as five psycho's stepped over me,
And headed for the other door, ready to kick it in I could see.
Before the shock adrenaline came over me, and I reached for Eddie's gun,
And started plugging away at the men, and they were dropping one by one,
After that I don't remember much, as I passed out from the pain,
And woke up here in hospital, "You saved the Leader" the doc explained.
After that day I retired, turned to big cigars and the rum,
Some may call me a derro, and some might say a drunken bum,
But some things should not need explaining, how a situation messes with your head,
But one day they will call it PTSD, nothing confirmed till after I am dead.
