The Falling Tide

The Falling Tide

Crawling up, falling down
The tug at the shore
The slip into the waves
The yearn to escape
The inevitable retreat
You always fought the inevitable retreat.
High tide it felt like some days
The rising waters, the stronger currents
Hope, optimism, flooded over you
The chance to make it over the final dune.
For other days, low tide
Little effort, unthreatening ripples
Hope lost to everyone, besides you.
For our waves had ceased
A quiet, inescapable despair.
Yet yours continued rolling,
Continued thrashing
That little chance hooked you like drugs.
A great determination, ambition, to live.
But two years have now passed.
That day when the waves crashed to a halt
The waves retreating for a final time.
The day any hope was put to rest
Yet, your goal to be better,
The way you crawled up, fell down
Your tugs at the shore
Your slips into the waves
Your yearn to escape
Drives us to be better every day
