The forgiving guest

The forgiving guest

I spent a moment with my conscience
She wasn’t kind to me
Imprisoned with my flaws and fault
Couldn’t let myself be free
I spent a week sat down with loneliness
An unwanted party guest
Empty seats surround my table
Feeling heartsick and depressed
A month spent with regret
Was a month spent far too long
Rewriting all the lyrics
To my tentative swan song
I had a year full of revision
A renovation of design
Dismantling a slippery slope
The restoration was a climb
I spent a lifetime with forgiveness
She never left my side
Firmly linked onto my arm
Until the day I died
