The Great Buffalo Hunters

The Great Buffalo Hunters

  Photo shows Buffaloes at the fence, in The Villages, Florida

The greatest hunter of the Buffalo, our country has ever known;
Was the renowned William Cody, this Frontiersman stands alone!
Much later, there came another Cody, who sought these wild beasts;
But instead of searching with a rifle, he looked his eyes to feast!
.
For in The Villages where he lived at, they roamed freely in some fields;
Within fences, they were quartered, keepers feeding them their meals!
With brother Nico and his Daddy, he would ride in a sleek golf cart;
We parked three feet from where they hung out, treats them to impart!
.
Their favorite ones were carrots, cut lengthwise and very thick;
He’d watch as his Daddy offered one, and on a long tongue it would stick!
So gently then they’d take it, and chew it thoroughly;
As we all watched in amazement, so dainty these Goliaths be!
.
Sometimes Cody would try to talk to them, letting out a little growl;
His Daddy worried they’d think he was aggressive, but they understood somehow!
We’d wave goodbye as we left them, they’d snort the same to us;
Buffalo hunting at The Villages, for Cody, a daily must!
.
.

Dear Greg,

The buffalo used to be in a large field, just off Buena Vista, almost to downtown.  The boys and I used to visit them regularly, after taking Nico and Cody to Miona for a long walk.  They were such gentle creatures, and I was not happy when the Morses came up with a bullshit reason for taking them away.  They said that some people were feeding them food that made them sick, instead of carrots, when the real reason was that they wanted to develop the land that they were kept on.  I'm surprised you never went to see them.

It's quite possible, that someday, we will be back.

All our love,
Linda and Larry xxx
