The Hag

The Hag

A murder of crows ascended
Like a thick, black cloud of doom,
Their raucous cries impended
The hag upon her broom.
When the twilight hour's upon us
And the daylight all but gone,
Little children rest their heads
Safe in lullabye's song.

For the hag she rides the night time skiesβ€”
Onward, through the clouds she flies!
And no one knows as well as I,
The evil in her bloodshot eyes.

This murderous hag descendedΒ
Upon a tiny village square,
Left her broomstick unattended
And searched the houses there.
She peered through all the keyholes
And she scratched at the window panes
Looking for a tiny soul
That she might take away.

For, the hag, she tries to steal a prize β€”
Onward through the night she spies,
And no one knows as well as I,
The evil in her blood shot eyes.

Thank you, Lorna! It's an older one that I've reworked a little. And as Halloween is only a few weeks away I dragged it out lol. Really glad you like it x

Β Tina, was held spellbound throughout for what you imagine and how you write it.
Β A superbly dark delight offered up and you never cop out, you go the whole (hog) hag.
It is a pleasure to read anything from you, anything!
Regardless of theme, for you write and poetically weave it so well.
And a mega early Happy Halloween to you my friend and thank you for this accomplished tenebrous poetry piece. x.

Thankyou, Shaun!Β  You never know, I might have a go at writing another one nearer Halloween ... I shall see how it goes. Thankyou so very much for your kind words and support ... it really is very much appreciated x

Well...nearly missed this one, so glad I didn't. Tina...true poetry. This work flows beautifully. It reads like a children's nightmare (and adults!) read out loud...I could see in my minds eye kids cowering in bed on a winter night being read this tale. There is a primal fear in all of us I think of things that go bump in the night and especially of unseen things rattling the windows and creeping about in the dark...and you have captured it all here. Just brilliant!!! xx

Awww...Marion, thankyou for your lovely comment. Not everyone's cup of tea, I know, especially on here, lol. Wicked witches is a thing everyone is trying to get away from these days. Judt a bit of old fashioned fun though. Glad you saw it that way and like it. Thanks a hagzillion xx

Bloomin brill & all while balanced on a broomstick too ..

Not only most timely with All Hallows only just around the corner, but you managed to strike a balance between folk fairy tale, myth and a lot of peoples unspoken separation anxieties ..Β  abduction, loosing loved ones and all sorts of other things that go bump in the night ..

Now while I may not sleep under my mattress tonight with a crash helmet on .. I could well do with some company for the rest of October x

Hahaha...lol!Β  It's an old fashioned piece of fun. These days religions are fiercely anti witch and uphold this stereotype while modern day witches are doing everything to change this way of thinking ( probably for the best). Me, being me, love old-fashioned stories. Thankyou for the visit and comment, Neville xx

A compelling piece with some great imagery, the poem flows so well as though it is flying with the old hag on her broom!
