The Old Man In The Pub

The Old Man In The Pub

The constant changes
Of what we knew from old,
It's better for you
That's what we are told
 -
These lifestyle lectures
Are beginning to grate,
I'm up to here
With this Nanny state
 -
I sought solace and respite
Desperate for some cheer,
To calm this torment
I needed a beer
 -
I sat in the pub
It was nearly empty,
So I asked the old man
Sat right next to me
 -
He said get me a pint
I'll reminisce,
About how we changed
From then to this
 -
I got him a Pint
He put his paper down
His mind looked back
And he said with a frown
 -
"Politicians of old
Knew of war and blood,
They said we'd never
Had it so good"
 -
"I lived my life
As I saw fit,
I paid my taxes
So live with it"
 -
"You see, I lived on my terms
I'll have the last say,
They're preaching tomorrow
But I live for today"
 -
"No amount of talk from me
Will change your life, you will see,
Look deep inside, to find your own voice
Find the right path, make the right choice"
 -
"They say they can extend my life
But I must pass on, to meet my wife,
Five years ago this very day
The angels came, she flew away"
 -
The old man emptied his glass
And turned in for the night,
He'd paid up his tab
He'd drank his last pint"

As I read his headstone
I'm told the words were his choice,
I read them out loud
But I can still hear his voice...
 -
"That was my pub
This was my town,
This was my life
When it's all boiled down"

"Do not tell me,
I can't have my fill
If I want to get drunk
I bloody well will".

YES!!!....There is SO much I like about this write.....one being that an old dive bar is one my favorite places to be on this earth...,playing songs on my guitar and singing with friends....but I dare say that one of the coolest things to do is to talk with old guy at the end of the bar...he ALWAYS has the best stories.....you delivered this with a great sense of understanding your subject matter...I'd bet it was easy for you to write this.....wouldn't be easy for most.....you did a stellar job with the timing in your phrasing my friend...,,I felt write at home with this brother poet!!......a great write and a great read!!......ALL STARS!!.....Loved it JOHN!!......well done.....LOVE and ROCKETS!!......T xo ?✳✴☀

Dear John,

The Old Man and the Sea, that surrounds him every day;
The old rowboat that he owns, the place where he now stays!
So lonely and so sad is he, for over now five years;
His mate had to abandon ship, he loved her very dear!

On the last night he would ever live, he went to the old pub;
He told the story of his life, for a needed plate of grub!
He said goodbye to his buddy, then went home to sleep and die;
Some days later, his pal came to see him, read his headstone, a long time cried!

Peace and Love,
Larry xxx
