The parish pump

The parish pump

Fixing roads,Ā
scratching backs
nods and winks aplenty,
village idiot
armed with cunningĀ
since the age of twenty.
Fixing favours
gormless charm
tending to his plot,
gullible follower
canvassing doorsteps
on his merry trot.
Another cheek
of posteriors past
yet we buy the spin,
the medical card
the planning permission
all part of the sin.
Matters in
the national interest
beyond his comprehension,
for he has
"expenses" paid
for that home extension.
A man of pride
yet slow on uptake
the kind you love to thump,
on certain rocks
he shall not perish
down by the parish pump.
