The Pugilist Poet

The Pugilist Poet

A pugilist poet has passed away

Kentucky’s son cast in Clay

An intellectual athlete

Whose words encouraged

People to strive to be free

A conscientious objector

Who was imprisoned

For what he believed

The world will never see

Another Muhammad Ali

We’re all familiar with Muhammad Ali's rhyming wit.  “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.”  But few realize that Ali wrote profound poetry.  Now You See Me; Last Night I Had a Dream; There Live a Great Man Named Joe; and my favorite, He Took a Few Cups of Love.

He took a few cups of love.

He took one tablespoon of patience,

One teaspoon of generosity,

One pint of kindness.

He took one quart of laughter,

One pinch of concern.

And then, he mixed willingness with happiness.

He added lots of faith,

And he stirred it up well.

Then he spread it over a span of a lifetime,

And he served it to each and every deserving person he met.

Indeed, he was the greatest boxer of all time.

Hi Fellow Face Book Mate,

Wow, Kimmy Alan, what a beautiful tribute.  He was a hero of mine!  I knew all about his pugilistic skills, but never realized he was a gifted poet other than his little predictions before a fight.  You have enlightened me and the world to the total encompassment of his genius.  As I stated in my poem, I did attend the title fight against Liston in February of 64 when he won his first world championship.  He was my Hercules and as a young man in Cincinnati, I was well aware of this young prodigy in Louisville.  Thank you for a beautiful write and augmenting my knowledge of my great fallen hero.

Peace and Love,

Larry

Not nearly as awesome as your tribute.  And to be there, when he beat Liston; something to remember for ever.

Kimmy, I like your approach here, well -written tribute, man....been hearing hours and hours of Ali tributes, dude for the first time in my life I actually shed a tear for someone I've never met, that was weird, but he really touched so many lives, felt like you knew him, somehow.... I'm guessing you are a member of 'the greatest generation,' I felt the emotional connection in your words, good stuff....cheers
