The Rankings Game
âTelĹ me about the rankingsâ
Said the spider to the fly,
âIs it votes all given by
the readers passing by?
Because if so, Iâm puzzled
and confused as I can be,
some nominations I have seen
collected barely three!
I must be wrong âsaid he to fly,
âIt cant be done that way,
because some weeks my offerings,
Iâm really pleased to say,
received great votes and comments too
and if thatâs how itâs made,
selections would be differentÂ
with no rain on my parade!
But no, if youâre a newcomer youâre
welcomed  to the site,
and as a welcome that is fineÂ
Though maybe not quite right,
Youâll get a nomination
 that keeps you In the frame,
the  next months see you trying
to get in the frame again!
Explain to meâ said spider
âIâm still so in the dark...
Just how exactly does one
win at all this poetry lark!
A little lighthearted number to be taken with a pinch of salt maybe?

Hereâs one to get you on your way!,, made me laugh out loud, but maybe  in a strange way it does  make a point as  noone really knows quite knows how the rankings are decided on by whoever selects the contest nominees.I think most people assume its based on the number of votes one gets but clearly thats not how its done as nominees often have quite low votes in comparison to other entries so who knows??? ! you rascal you ! xx

WOW!!....I LOVE this!!..... when we take a cold hard look at the truth of this matter.... it seems to me.... and I'm just guessing here...... but I think administration nominates the newcomers each month... no matter how good or bad the offering...... so that they will tell their friends with excitement about this site... thereby getting a steady stream of newcomers to see the little advertising blurbs that are constantly passing through this site..... because the truth is that this site is heavily supported by the amount advertising space that the administration sells to keep the site afloat...... which in ANY business is a main source of monthly income..... after all...... Business is business..... and I for one am grateful that we have this site to share our poetry with others and to use as our individual work stations....... we make friends here and we can refer business people in our lives to this site to take a look at our work...... so for me, Cosmo supplies a great number of services to its serious writers...... Free of charge...... and that is a great thing in the grand scheme of things!! The new comers provide a steady source of responses for the advertisers and we in turn get a site that has an administration that loves poetry and provides a permanent gathering place for writers looking for feedback on their work.......GREAT write STEVIE C!!........love your sense of humor.......... love your style dear poet brother!!....... Hi Tony  love your comments..I had gathered that the situation regarding Newcomers was exactly as you describe and as you say âBusiness is Businessâ my curiosity though is more in how the rankings work?Iâm kind of interested in maybe knowing who and how the âJudgesâ reach their decisions on winning entries as  clearly its not based on how popular or well received the poems are by the Community and sometimes when reading some of the poems itâs a puzzle ..but then each to their  own I guess and not knowing what professional experience the Judges have itâs difficult to see what criteria is used..but hey ho itâs just a querky question that rattles around my head sometimes!  Also we now seem to be getting more requests from new poets to âreview and presumably vote their work, which didn't seem to happen so much  before but is something that is prevalent on some other sites and which personally I loath as it then becomes a â I have read yours and voted ..now do mineâ type of thing and personal choice seems to be replaced by pressure to positively vote despite preference..I guess though thatâs just the way of things these days  so I must stop being a grouch! But nonetheless still curious to know haha..stay well my friend..and hugs and smiles right back at you .
