The unhappy proposal

Ladies and gentlemen thank you for watching my shit show
I am humiliated and you stand and watch the uproar
She did it so sweetly, planned it discreetly
Got down on one knee, like in the myths that aren’t for me
Put her hand in mine, and asked me a question
Our eyes meet in a moment, my soul dispels into desolation
If she knew where my heart is at
She wouldn’t be making a fool of herself, comfortably sat
The crowd is watching, begging me to answer positively
My heart is screaming NO, I part my lips hesitantly
Oh only if she knew, my heart weans, but not for her
Tears catch my eyes, this moment is beginning to blur
I step back and pull my hand out of hers, her eyes scope my lost face
I’ve unearthed unhappiness, I’m pulling out of this embrace
I mutter under my breath, leaning towards her ear
I tell her what she needs to know, not what she wants to hear
I turn away and fight through the human ambush
I clamber shoulders and bodies in a panicky rush
I’ve left a woman to bear pain alone
I’ve cut myself loose from a woman forlorn
Free to love the one I love
