These Things

You can have them all,
You can take it all today.
These things I have no need for,
These things I've kept away....
These things we find of interest,
These things we seek with glee.
In the great scheme of things,
They mean so little to me.
As I grow older and look around,
I see people's avarice so unabated.
Their demons demand the latest gizmo,
This take take take for me so hated.
Hey! It's shiny and new!
Hey! I want one too!
Lend me the money!
For I haven't any!
Their choice is made,
Their money spent,
They have none left,
To pay their rent.
They all are eBay's favourite son,
No, oh my God what have I done!
A nasty letter from their worried bank,
Of money keeping they draw a blank.
They never care,
It's day by day.
But perhaps one day,
They'll have to pay.
But credit's easy,
Credit's fun!
The more you borrow,
More time in the sun!
They do not care,
It's gain gain gain!
Their avarice plans,
I so disdain.
There is no space left on our floor,
Why should we donate it to the poor.
When all we crave is more and more,
Oh these sparkly things we so adore!
For on this issue,
I've dropped the ball.
A harsh lesson,
For one and all...
For I must admit and to my shame,
When I was young I played their game.
And damn the homeless in the rain,
For of their plight I feel no shame.
Huddled together on a cold wet night,
Again I feel no sympathy for their plight.
But now I changed and seen the light,
No longer lusting after things so bright.
My thoughts for others and not of me,
A certitude of life the way it should be.
My wants are simply few,
Needing now nothing new.
For a person can change.
And that's up to...
You.

Greg thank you so much for liking and pinning this poem, perhaps a little angry in places but a lesson to learn, the hard way.
Thanks again and for taking your time to choose to read it.
I wish you well and respect to you sir.
The dreaded credit card! Well, it is for me. The debt they can get you into terrifies me. This poem is soooo true, Shaun. Well done for making a warning so poetic 😊 x
Tina many thanks and how well you put it for credit is too easy for all ages, especially the young when starting off in life and hopefully won't be tempted by it. But that takes a lot of willpower I suppose and easy for me to say.
But there's always hope that those that do turn things around to their advantage and have a less stressed life concerning materialism.
Thanks again and I wish you well.😊
Right on Shaun! agreed our poems are addressing the exact same idea! well done my friend! I was a bit more"Being Cynical" about MSM......................Jim
Jim glad you can see it for what they both are trying to achieve and deliver.
And thank you for reading and your conclusions drawn.
Kudos to you and for the poetry record I believe you are this planet's most UNCYNICAL man that has ever walked upon it!
Respectfully your friend, Shaun.
