TO FORGIVE

At first we find felicity
in that sparkling new bond of unity,
but eventually we come to find
this love, too, is just the fleeting kind
that leaves us reeling in the wake
of yet another sad mistake;
Emotions then run raw and strong
for the one we feel has done us wrong.

It floods the heart with dissonance,
it shatters dreams, it makes no sense,
it rocks the foundation we hold dear,
it saps our strength, it brings on tears,
it lays heavy in the stomach pit
and it hurts so much that we want to quit
the search for that special one
because love, it seems, has come undone.

And it's during those trying times that grate
we often slip into an altered state
where we commence upon a baleful trudge
down the dirty road toward an eternal grudge;
We refuse to give a second chance
to the fool who ruined a fine romance.
