Trigger

Trigger

The trigger is tripped instantly
without any lift of a finger
memories come flooding back,
some are fleeting...others linger.

Oft times the remembrances are mere snippets
while others are crystal clear...
every detail vivid and perfectly intact
of a cherished moment we hold dear.

Stimuli take us back in time
whether sight, song, or smell,
releasing the safety on a locked up past
causing emotions to ebb and swell.

Not every recollection is pleasant
but shaped our adulthood nonetheless,
a cumulative impact from choices made
much like an intricate life-game of chess.

Each individual encounters darker times
not one is clear of blemish or stain;
every challenge and loss builds character
to net a cumulative gain.

Rather than squelch and suppress these times
choose to relish and embrace,
for memories can be easily engaged
regardless of life's current pace.

A person's written map in life
is compiled with each passing day,
replicated not by another soul...
each carving a unique way.

Be comfortable with biting the bullet,
recalling successes, failures, and dreams,
for time can erode the trigger away
holding hostage all memory streams.

Hey JACKI.......this is most excellent......I get the feeling the "Trigger" inferring a gun's violence is tied up deeply somewhere in this enigmatic .....yet seemingly forthcoming piece..... in that way there's a kind of brilliance to what you're conveying ..........I get the feeling your life has been pretty intense!!.........thanx for sharing this !!.........ALL STARS!!.......LOVE and ROCKETS!!.......T xo

Hey Tony!  Finally got back out here. :)  I've had a pretty good life, can't complain at all!  My father's depression & anxiety and what he has been going through lately have probably had an impact on recent writings I must admit...  Having a teenage daughter has also brought exposure to new things as a parent - ha!  My heart goes out to those who have or still do encounter violence in relationships...may they all find peace & healing.  Always welcome your feedback!*!*!

Thanks Leah!  I didn't intend for the poem to feel intense but it must have that vibe... :)  My point at the end is dementia/Alzheimer's can take away our memories, eroding the triggers that allow us to recall moments of the past.  Cruel condition...  Take care!*!*!
