Vacant Desks
Bullets thundered across the room,
Shells lie scattered underneath the chalk board,
Where chalks once would,
Blood flew like the river,
Faster than knowledge ever could,
And where there was once laughter and voices,
Silent tears echo loud,
Filled with anger and misery,
Sunken eyes look around,
In hope they could just see even a glimpse of their fallen friends,
The playgrounds lay vacant,
Recess isn’t the same,
Finally there is pin drop silence in the classes,
Yet the teacher can’t seem to teach,
There is quiet in the class but an absence of peace,
The teacher’s eyes too begin to wander,
The heart aches to spot the sight of that mischievous soul,
Or even the one that would be lost looking out the window,
For a second their eyes almost do meet,
But it is no more than mirage,
The desk still lie vacant,
Darkness reverberates across the floor,
Is this what we have achieved?Â
To turn a block of wisdom,
Into a zone of probable death,
 26,000 and counting since 1999,
That’s the number of children that the guns haven’t spared,
It is true this earth has seen darker days,
But is this all the justification there is?Â
Does owning a gun make you feel safe?Â
Or is it just more of boost to ego,
That you are the biggest predator there is?
If you could open your eyes and see-
Most of these kids didn’t even get their opportunity to live,
And, you sit and argue on your right to bear?Â
If they could speak from their graves,
Maybe then you would understand,
That no matter what the second amendment says,
You would never be able to fill those vacant desks.

Hello, Yash Sanghvi.
This is such a raw, expressive piece concerning the state of chaos much of our world is in today.
Not only are school shootings on the rise but mass murder by guns in general are rampant.
While I AM an advocate of the right to bear arms by trained, law-abiding citizens, I also feel more could be done with gun laws and technology to reduce the occurrence of such incidents.
Smart chip technology has been available for quite some time now. But because groups like the NRA feel it would make guns too expensive they are kept from coming to fruition.
Any civilian who owns a gun should be made to take a training class on firearm use and saftey as well.
You refuse to take the class, you don't get a gun.
Nicely penned, albeit, a very sad social commentary.

Hi Dean,
Thank you for the comment.
To be honest I am for safer gun control, I know what it feels like to hold and fire a gun had the privilege to do so but at the same time a part of me believes there’s no such thing as safer thing as safer gun measures, I’m kind of conflicted in that sense and while writing this, it was the other part of me that influenced it. There’s so much destruction in the world and innocent kids are the ones that are truly affected and just seeing things like this on the news day in and day out and the entire argument around it. Guns are meant to keep people safe and protect them in their hour of need and I don’t mean to generalise but it’s the same case as it is with Islam a few bad men ruin everything and make life worse for the good guys.Â
I do agree with you, there needs to  better training and education for the civilians who bear arms include a stringent back ground check.Â
I appreciate your comment.
Hope you have a nice day.
