Wasted Words

“I love you,” he says
as his gaze turns away.
“I need you,” he says
and goes on his way.
“What a great meal,” he says
without taking a bite
“How was your day?”, he asks
with your tears in plain sight.
“Such a beautiful day,” he says
but avoids holding you close.
“I’m watching TV,” he says
when you need him the most.
“What’s for dinner?” he asks
and “Can you do me a favor?”
as your hope slowly dies
and your love starts to waver.
The words are hollow
even annoy a bit
when their impact is nill
and the phrases don’t fit.
No words would be better,
replaced with a touch
a kiss, a hug, a smile...
or something of the such.
Empty words mean nothing
and invade mental space
fill up her arms
to take up their place

Thanks so much Tony! I've read some of your talent-laden work so it's an honor that you enjoyed this piece. Fortunately my marriage is nothing like this. :) Feel for people in these situations when there's so much more!
