Where I Have Been

The Layers of Life

The earths surface changes in season, in climate, cold, and hot
Parts of it die, dry up, and decay, other parts bloom, and grow
Layers of rongs around a tree, layers of lines across my grandmothers face
Ages of life, ages of years gone by, the time between man and chlld colide
The fossils, the bone, pieces of stone of our ancestors
The onion seed planted, it roots, then it is nourishment
The embryo of the bird breaks out of its egg
The sky meets the earth, the waters meet the sand
The veins of blood run through this land
A native hand across these valleys, these mountains
The rock of ages, pebbled turquoise jewelry made by hand
Drawings of animals etched on clay pots
The onion peeled each layer a tear of the past
Where life began, life must end in a hollow of webbed time
