WILLIAMSJI MAVELI Poem
THE TIDES OF LOVE

THE TIDES OF LOVE
The tide is full, the moon looks beautiful
On the straits; on the Goan coast, the light
Shines and disappears;
the cliffs of Arabian sea stand,
Glimmering and huge, out in the calm bay.
Come to the window, the night-air is sweet!
Only, from the long line of spray
Where the sea meets
the moon-brightened land,
Listen! you hear the grating roar
Of pebbles which the waves draw back, and throw,
At their return, up the high shore,
Start, and stop, and then again start,
With shaky rhythm slow, and carry
The everlasting note of sadness in.
