Winners and Losers

Winners and Losers

I was a winner although some said a sinner,
they started to say: 'Guess who's coming to dinner,'
count your blessings, perhaps we don't count enough,
always concerned that we'll just end up in the rough.

You passed your driving test, didn't say where the tyre valves were,
or the brake fluid cylinder or the handbrake cable, etcetera,
now you have to, as tho' found out like a naughty schoolboy,
if you're not good enough in bed, dumped like a discarded toy.

They said that I was good at my job, driving F1 cars,
as long as I win and keep being one of their stars,
now I'm dressed in black with the world at my feet,
would you wish to be one of those whose difficult to beat?

What's your forte, expertise, your one claim to fame?
you may never win unless you have a strange sounding name.

Note: They say that it's the participating not just the winning  but unless you've won something - you'll never know.

Hi Terry, I just wanted to say that this poem really resonated with me. Its really well written and the meter is excellent. I enjoyed reading your piece and look forward to reading some of your other work. All the best. The Fish of the Sea.

Hi Terry. Such a deep write about winning. I do agree its what the world wants to see winners....thou nowadays famous losers really get in the media for their downfalls. Really enjoyed the deep structural thought in this.
