Women's hearts

Women's hearts

She left loss behind, campaigning
For want. Desire lapped the ‘pool’
She stood above the well-born
The Royal Albert was their hall.

Their hands bound when arrested –
Hunger struck whilst behind bars
You may force-feed me if that’s your will
But you are so very far

From winning over our design, so dearly sought –
It speaks to what we’re worthy of.
Forgotten souls us suffragists –
Behold danger, unaware of.

Harking back a century
Their sentiment was lost –
Mother had no right to children, born –
Given to the wealthy, to adopt.

Standing in front of the horse
With jockey on the ride
Journalists would cover it –
The rising of the tide.

Stand out, stand up, stand your ground –
“Women count,” Mrs. Pankhurst said
A cause, so bold, emboldened
By women’s hearts that bled.
