XU Lizhi: I Swallowed a Moon Made of Steel
By Xu Lizhi (28 July 1990 β 30 September 2014)
Translated by Yiyan Han, 2023-10-01 (c)
I swallowed a moon made of steel
bolt and nut asΒ they call it
I swallowed the water of industrial waste
the purchase order of unemployment
and those died young, shorter thanΒ bench lathes
I swallowed that being constantly on the move
and being a displaced worker
Took it the pedestrian bridge
and took it my rusty living
But I can't take it nor swallow it any longer
All Iβve swallowed is now thrown up
on the soil of my homeland
to form a poem of disgrace!
Footnote:

that is so beautiful. He looks very young in the image,Β
Yes, he was 24, and was a tragic loss!
it is so very sad when others commit suicide. he must have been at a point where he could no longer cope. the poem you can tell is riddled with sadness and pain.
"bolt and nut" has a special meaning in the Chinese communist's propaganda: they regard the country as aΒ communism machine, and every Chinese is merely aΒ "bolt and nut" on it.
Gave me goosebumps. Thank you for translating this heartbreaking yet amazing piece for us to read.
May he rest in peace ππ»π
